Is it possible to run open servo v3 @5v by changing some component(s) code
any help or direction will be highly appreciated
thank you for your time in advance
cheers |

| At a first thought, if you jump out the 5V reg, and supply a solid 5V, perhaps you can. Note you will need a very responsive 5V supply. I seem to recall that if the Vreg line drops to around 3.5 to 4V bad things happen. At 5V many motors may be sluggish, and you will likely loose torque if it's rated for say 7.2V. But if you don't need that torque, it might work OK. |

The problems I can see here are that theonboard regulator will cause problems. You can't just feed in 5v as the LDO regulator needs at least 6.2 in order to function. If you bypass the regulator, and then feed in a direct 5v to the board, you might be ok, but then you will be in the realm of problems that jharvey mentions.
This was a mod that some people did with the v2 boards, and all were unhappy (myself included) when the drop in voltage caused by a sudden load made the AVR brownout. _________________ http://www.headfuzz.co.uk/

thank you lads.
One more thing, is it possible to modify it to run brushless motors? |

No. The construction of BLDC motors requires the conversion of standard DC current into 3-phase AC. This just isn't feasible with the currently standard hardware.
That being said, it would be entirely possible to create new hardware from scratch to turn a BLDC motor into a servo using the OpenServo source code.

anyone up for it? I'm willing to pay for the time (it has to be reasonable amount tho) |

I personally don't have the time to do this myself but it would be a very nice thing to have.
I will add to your bounty and throw in some OpenServo hardware, OSIF and some servos for anyone who can put a design forward. _________________ http://www.headfuzz.co.uk/

FireBALL,
I will accept this challenge. You don't need to pay me anything other than the cost for hardware prototypes. I'll probably rely heavily on Barry for technical advice, but I don't need any money or products from him either. I'll do it just for the fun of it.
Actually, I already started working on this and I have a rough schematic already. Give me the rest of tonight to clean it up and I'll start a new thread so we can stop hijacking this one. We can start looking over it tomorrow. Talk to you soon.

As promised, I've created another thread in the "hardware" section to further investigate this topic. Talk to you soon.

To summarize:
I drafted a schematic. That's about it. If anyone with gear design experience gets in touch with me, I'd be willing to work on this more. Simply making a BLDC motor spin isn't enough. There are plenty of off-the-shelf solutions for that. What I need is a BLDC servo, which includes a geartrain. At the moment, there aren't any cost-effective solutions for this, and the value in using BLDC motors over brushed doesn't yet justify the cost. _________________ "Nothing is fool-proof; For we fools are ingenious and will find a way." |
