I came across this site which speculates about Lego coming out with full rotation servos that can sense position -- perhaps through an optical encoder or something.

While a bit of a Necro-post, I thought I would try to be of some use and give an answer...

Near the bottom of the page he disassembles a NXT motor and shows the encoder wheel, the page also includes torque specs for these motors.

Also of note is http://nxtasy.org many users have devised several I2C sensors and have included instructions.
